Green-Schools
Scoil Bhride is a very active school in the Green Schools Programme and has had great success in the past few years implementing it in our school. The Green-Schools Programme provides an ideal way for encouraging environmental awareness among children and developing great ideas for Reducing, Reusing and Recycling waste and litter both at home and at school. Scoil Bhride has been awarded two Green flags for the themes of Litter and Waste and Energy. We are currently working on the third theme of Water.
There are seven steps involved in becoming a Green School for all themes they are as follows:
1. Green-Schools Committee
2. Environmental Review
3. Action Plan
4. Monitoring and Evaluating
5. Curriculum Work
6. Informing and Involving
7. Establishing a Green Code
Theme: Litter and Waste

- In April and May children from the Green-Schools Committee carried out various surveys based upon litter and waste found in our school. They also reviewed the measures currently in place in relation to litter and waste.
From our Environmental Review for Litter and Waste, we compiled an Action Plan for the year 2011/2012:
- Replace blue tissues in the bathrooms with a towel each day.
- Arrange two bins to be used in each classroom to collect breadcrusts and organic waste.
- Collection of bread and organic waste each day.
- Introduce the concept of children taking home any packaging and waste which they have left after eating their lunch each day.
- Erecting a bird table in the garden.
- Teachers will teach lessons about litter to their class.
- Litter will be collected twice a week from the school entrance and car park.
- Vegetables and flowers will be sown in the garden.

Our Litter and Waste Trail
The children from the Green-Schools committee created a Litter and Waste Trail around our school. This trail will help the children identify important areas around the school that are linked to our aim of reducing the amount of litter and waste created in our school.
1. Our compost and bread crusts bins in our classroom
We put our banana skins and apple cores in the compost bin. We put our bread crusts in the bread crusts bin so that we can feed them to the birds.
2. Our Green-Schools wall
We display all our Green-Schools work that we are undertaking on this wall so everyone is kept up to date with our work.
3.Our Green-Schools recycling area
We have collection bins in our recycling area for collecting old card, stamps, mobile phones, batteries and ink cartridges.
4.Our school bins
These bins are used to collect our recycling and waste each day. We have reduced the number of recycling bins we fill fortnightly from 2 to 4 due to our hard work. We are hoping to reduce the number of waste bins we have by 1 over the coming year.
5.Our Composter
We put our compost that is collected in school into our composter. This food will decay over time and we will use it to fertilize our school garden.
6.Our Bird Table
We give the birds our left over bread crusts each day.

Our Energy Poem by Zarah and Shauna
Come on everybody save Energy!
Boys and girls,
Let us all save Energy.
Turn off the lights because it's not going to be quiet nice,
when your mam comes shouting turn off the light!
The world would be a better place if we all joined the race to save Energy.
Come on everybody save Energy!
Boys and girls,
Let us all save Energy.
Turn off the lights because it's not going to be quiet nice,
when your mam comes shouting turn off the light!
The world would be a better place if we all joined the race to save Energy.
Green-Schools Committee 2014-2015
Each school year a new Green-Schools committee is created. All teachers are asked to put forward the names of any children in their class who would be interested in being on the committee. These names are then put in a hat. All classes will then be informed of the results.
On the 17th of September the new Green-School committee for 2014-2015 held their first meeting. There are 6 children from 5th and 6th class, 6 children from 3rd and 4th class, 5 children from 1st and 2nd class and 4 children from Junior and Senior Infants. Ms.O'Donoghue and MS. Hennessy will be the teachers on the committee. We will have meetings every fortnight.
Our Action Plan for Energy shows our continued work to help improve energy awareness. In order for the committee to add more actions to our plan we decided to carry out various activities again relating to Litter and Waste and Energy. The following were some activities we have undertaken:
Two children carried out a Litter and Waste survey of various areas around the school in order to find out which areas need addressing.
Two children looked at both the waste and recycling bins in each room and identified items in each.
Two children checked the various rooms during break and lunch time to identify ways which we are wasting Energy.
Two children wrote various ways we can save Energy and a copy of this will be sent home.
Three children counted the amount of switches, radiators and doors in the school.
Six children made Energy Awareness posters which will be displayed around the school.
When the committee have looked at and identified the results from our findings we will then update our Action Plan.
As part our continuous work to help encourage children to be more aware of recycling and saving Energy we have again reintroduced our daily points chart. Two children from our committee visited each classroom to remind children how points are awarded. The following is a list of the various children from the Green-Schools committee which will be involved in awarding the points each week. A copy of the this has also been given to each child involved.

Our Green Schools Motto for Water
Help Scoil Bride Save Every Drop.
Our Water Poem
All around you our water is wasting,
Even if you do not know it,
Whether dripping taps of leaky baths,
It is wasting bit by bit,
Even a tiny drop can lead to a large amount,
So when you see a dripping tap,
Every drop you see will count,
So will you follow our trend we've set,
To save our precious water?
Tell you friends, let then know.
Help us save water!

Water Saving Tips for at home
- Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
- Check leaky taps and cisterns.
- Get out of the shower as soon as you are clean.
- Wait until you have full loads in the washing machine and dish washer before you turn them on.
- Don't fill the kettle up too much unless you need all the water.
- Water plants using a watering can instead of a hose as it wastes less water.
