Dear Parents
As part of our 3 year DEIS Plan focusing on the area of Wellness/Wellbeing we at SBC have recently upgraded our Sensory Room. We wanted to create a calming environment, a room where students can self-regulate, breathe and spend some quiet time with their thoughts. This will give a sense of inner calm and peace.
We painted two walls a Gatsby Blue as this is a calm and soothing colour that diffuses anxiety and it will encourage a sense of calm and relaxation.
As you enter the room you are greeted by glow in the dark stars and earth planets on the wall. On the ceiling we have our Solar System. This creates an immersive environment that can transport students to space. We also have a printed copy of our Solar System on the door, complete with the names of the planets this helps pupils learn more about The Solar System.
Around the edges of the ceiling is a striking blue light that can change colour and be used to brighten up our Sensory Room.
Our Galaxy Projector points up towards the ceiling and this projects beautiful red and blue colours that change and magnificent green stars drift in and out. This creates a universe and gives a majestic feel to our Sensory Room.
The Wall Projector that projects under the Ocean is a great way to engage students in sensory exploration, by naming different types of Ocean Life or just to sit back and watch the tropical fish swimming over a Coral Reef. This can help students to reduce their stress and anxiety levels and create a safe environment.
The Sensory Touch Panels on the wall provide students with a tactile experience that can help regulate their sensory input. Additionally, the Lava Lamps, Touch Lamps and soothing classical music playing in the background can help create a calming and relaxing atmosphere.
Our Sensory Room is a valuable addition to SBC. It can provide a safe and supportive environment for all students to regulate their emotions, improve focus and explore sensory experiences.
Having a Sensory Room available to all pupils can help create a more inclusive environment, where all children feel valued and supported.
Thank you for all your help and support in making this possible.
